Themes and significance

Ties that bind, ties that break

Women’s role

This was completely set at birth, as they were supposed to get married and make part of another family their feet were broken and bound so her future husband will found her more desirable. Discrimination against female it has been a never-ending situation and this topic only shows the tip of the iceberg, where women were just a decoration and their only goal in life was to get married.

Marriage

Seen as honor for the family it was a most for women.“Engaged” even before been birth, women had not choice or voice in the decision of their families, they would get married with whoever their families wanted. The decision made by Ailin was hard and brave, because she confronted the consequences of it.

Tradition

The family portrait in the book is very traditionalist. Men are supposed to work while Women are supposed to take care of the house and the family and, of course, they had to get married and therefore, they had to bound their feet.

Significance of the title

“Ties that bind, ties that break” has two meaning for me, first: ties that link us to our families and second: the ties that our families want us to accept for our own “good”. Those ties that connect us to our families can also break our soul and our will of living and the fact that we find the strength to break those ties means that we are strong enough to face real life and to find a way to make our dreams come true.
