Namioka is a famous writer of children and young adult books, she was born on
the 14th June 1929, in Beijing, China. From her childhood, she was keen on
writing and reading to such an extent that she wrote her first novel in pieces
of paper and sewed it. When the Japanese invasion took place in 1937, Namioka’s
family moved to western China, the cultural differences regarding the food and
dialect variation within their own country made her feel like an outsider.
Finally, before the end of the war they moved to the United States. At first
Namioka did not know English, therefore she used to stand out in math because
it employed the same numerals, at the end she earned a bachelor and a master
degree in math. For a time she worked as a math teacher, still she changed of
mind and she redirected her life towards the writing field.
Among her
work there are several historical mystery novels such as: The Samurai and the
Long-Nosed Devils (1976), White Serpent Castle ( 1976), Valley of the Broken Cherry
Trees (1980), and Village of the Vampire Cat (1981).
Furthermore,
thanks to the quality and popularity of her books she has received several
awards which include:
• California Young Reader Medal
• Washington State Governor's Writers
Award
• Parents Choice Gold Medal
